Boston, MA — Arthur Edwards Strout, 89, passed away on February 13, 2025, in Boston, MA, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was surrounded by his family.
Arthur was born on September 6, 1935, in Rockland, to Alfred Meserve Strout and Olive Edwards Strout. He grew up in Thomaston and spent summers on Clark Island, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He attended Hebron Academy for his final year of high school before graduating from Bowdoin College in 1957 with a degree in economics. He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1960.
Arthur began his legal career with the U.S. Department of Justice, working in San Francisco, CA, and Washington, DC, before returning to Camden with his family in 1971. He became a respected attorney in the Rockland area at the firm Strout & Payson and served as chairman of the Board of Bar Examiners of Maine. He was also a longtime board member of Camden National Bank.
In his 70s, Arthur retired and moved to Beacon Hill in Boston. A passionate traveler and avid hiker, Arthur especially cherished his many treks through the Alps. He also enjoyed investing, mysteries, playing handball, and cooking for his family — he will be remembered fondly for his bread, pizza, and piadina.
A lifelong fan of the Celtics and Red Sox, he loved going to see them play at the Boston Garden and Fenway.
Arthur is survived by his wife and partner of forty years, Carol Lundquist; as well as his sons from a previous marriage, Alfred (Kathleen) Strout, of Burlington, VT, and Charles (Allison) Strout, of New York, NY. He was also a proud grandfather of five grandchildren: Emily, Kristin, Griffin, Eliza, and Nathaniel Strout.
