Edward B. Hayes ’78

Edward B. Hayes ’78 died of a heart attack May 9, 2013, in Barcelona, Spain. He was born in Mexico City, Mexico, grew up in Mexico, Iraq, Switzerland, Colombia, and the United States, and prepared for college at Phillips Academy Andover. At Bowdoin, where he was a dean’s list student and a James Bowdoin Scholar, he helped start the Saltwater College, a series of events designed to heighten the awareness of the ocean, encourage use of the sea in a various disciplines, and to stimulate interest in the marine environment. John C. Schmeidel ’78

John C. Schmeidel ’78 died June 25, 2013, in Taipei, Taiwan, of liver failure. He was born on February 6, 1957, in Phoenix, Ariz., and prepared for college at Dulaney Senior High School. A dean’s list student who achieved high honors in every class his junior year, he graduated from Bowdoin magna cum laude, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a James Bowdoin Scholar. Continue reading

Brent W. Tatum ’78

Brent W. Tatum ’78 died March 10, 2013, at his home in Derby, Vt., of metastatic sarcoma. He was born on April 17, 1956, in Washington, D.C., and prepared for college at New Canaan (Conn.) High school. He was a dean’s list student at Bowdoin and received high honors in all his classes in the fall of 1976.
