Austin F. Leach III ’76 died on July 4, 2022, in Port Townsend, Washington.

Austin Felix “Peter” Leach, lll passed away at his home in Port Townsend, Wash., in the early morning hours of July 4, 2022. The cause of death was a heart attack. Peter was happiest anywhere he could feel “the wind in his face,” whether skiing, kayaking, long distant running, biking, or sailing.
Peter was born Aug. 26, 1953 in Fitchburg, Mass., to Marjorie Denise (Dinny) Leach, and Austin Felix (Tex) Leach, Jr.. In 1960, the family moved to Portland, Ore., where he attended Riverdale Elementary School (1968), and The Catlin Gabel School (1972). Peter graduated from Bowdoin College in 1976. Peter was an avid outdoorsman, a builder of custom houses and boats, and an accomplished multi-sport athlete. He was particularly passionate about environmental issues, and the rights of Native Americans.
Peter is survived by two sons, Hunter McKenzie Leach (Missoula, Mont.), Simon Masarie Leach (San Francisco, Calif.); by his former wife, Diana Masarie. He is also survived by two sisters, Sallie Leach Jackal (Philadelphia, Pa.), Susan Taylor Moody (Woodstock, Vt.); two nephews; and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents.
