The Honorable Berle Mark Schiller, senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025. Born in Brooklyn, NY, to Morris and Edith Schiller, Berle earned his B.A. from Bowdoin College in 1965, where he served as vice president of his senior class. He went on to receive his J.D. from NYU School of Law in 1968. He began his legal career in private practice (1968, 1969, 1972–1993) and served as deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania in 1971. In 1994, Berle was appointed chief counsel for the Federal Transit Administration in Washington, D.C., under President Clinton, shaping national transit policy and legal strategy until 1996. He then served as a judge on the Pennsylvania Superior Court (1996–2000). In April 2000, President Clinton nominated him to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; he was confirmed in May and received his commission on June 2, 2000. He assumed senior status on June 18, 2012. Berle was also committed to public service beyond the courtroom. He served as chairman of PATH, Inc., a nonprofit mental health center, and sat on the boards of organizations focused on expanding mental health services throughout Pennsylvania. He contributed to legal ethics and oversight through his appointments to the Criminal Procedural Rules Committee of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the Hearing Committee of the Disciplinary Board. He also served on the Governor’s Committee to select Court of Common Pleas judges. At the local level, Berle remained actively engaged in education and civic life through the Lower Merion Home and School Association. Outside the courtroom, Berle had a lifelong passion for bowhunting and fishing. He traveled extensively to pursue both, and his judicial chambers were famously decorated with trophies and stories from his time outdoors. His love of nature remained a constant throughout his life. Above all, Berle was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Molly Schiller; and his children: Jonathan Schiller and his wife, Sonig, Joseph Schiller, Abigail Friedman and her husband, Harley Friedman, and Maggie Corrado and her husband, Chris Corrado. He is also survived by his grandchildren Isabel, Anabel, Sadie, Shane, Jude, Lily, Mason, and Amelia; his brothers Alan Schiller (Regina) and Myles Schiller (Carol); and his sister, Joan Schiller.
