George G. J. Richter ’51 died August 12, 2012, in Miami, Fla. He was born on September 2, 1924, in Seymour, Conn., and prepared for Bowdoin at Richmond (Maine) High School and the University of Maine. After high school, he joined the Army Air Forces and served in the European Theater during World War II. He spoke fluent German, which was a useful skill for his work at the War Department. After the war, he worked on Wall Street for a brokerage firm before moving to Miami. In 1964, he began teaching German at Miami Coral Park Senior High School. When the foreign language program ended, he taught American history, retiring in 1987. He and his wife were members of the German-American Social Club and the Olympia Heights Methodist Church. In 2009, he was diagnosed with a meningioma, to which he eventually succumbed. He is survived by Charlotte, his wife of 65 years; sons Rainer, Marc and Randolph Jon; daughter Katherine; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
