Glen “Gig” Ortman, 78, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Glen brought warmth, humor, and joy to all who knew him.

Born on May 25, 1947, in Fort Lee, New Jersey, Glen was the son of John and Evelyn Ortman. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Bowdoin College before earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver. With a sharp legal mind and unwavering dedication to his profession, Glen built a distinguished career in energy law. His excellence was recognized nationally—he was named in both the 2023 and 2024 editions of The Best Lawyers in America under the category of Energy Law, and was ranked among the top five percent in his field. Glen continued practicing law until May of last year, when he retired after decades of impactful work.

Beyond his professional achievements, Glen was known for his deep faith and commitment to service. A devout Catholic, he attended daily Mass at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Alexandria or St. Matthews in DC. His spiritual life was a cornerstone of his identity and guided his actions throughout his life.

Glen’s love for life extended far beyond the courtroom. He was an avid sailor, skier, and golfer. A passionate supporter of Washington sports teams, Glen proudly held season tickets to the Washington Capitals for over thirty years. His enthusiasm for D.C. sports was matched only by his devotion to his family. His self-proclaimed favorite week each year was annual family vacations in the OBX, BHI, or the Homestead.

He is survived by his cherished wife, Sue Ortman; daughter Sarah Sams; son Connor Ortman; granddaughter Charley Sams. Glen’s love for his family was boundless—he was described as the very best father, grandfather, and husband. Those closest to him will remember not only his loyalty but also the way he radiated kindness in every interaction.

His welcoming nature made everyone feel at ease; he had a rare ability to light up any room with laughter and sincerity. Whether sharing stories over dinner or cheering on the Capitals from the stands, Glen lived each moment with passion and purpose.

Glen Ortman leaves behind a legacy defined by integrity, generosity, laughter, and love—a life well-lived that touched countless others along the way. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
