J. Stephen Codner ’64 died on September 14, 2024, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Stephen Codner, died at UMass Memorial Medical Center with loved ones by his side, Saturday, September 14, 2024. His beloved wife, Peggy, died in 2023. Steve leaves his three sons: Peter and his wife, Jodi, of Auburn; Kevin and his wife, Christine, of Lakeville, MN; Tristan and his wife, Emily, of Grafton: eight grandchildren: Sarah, Ryan, Skylar, Nicholas, Penelope, Vivienne, Jon, and Scott; four great grandchildren: Cordelia, Carlos John, Alana, and Sophia; his brother, Keith Codner of New London, CT; and four nephews and one niece.
Steve was born in Hartford, CT, September 27, 1942, to the late Charles and Dorothy (Whitcomb) Codner. He graduated from Newington High School in 1961 and Bowdoin College in 1964, with a degree in economics. He had lived in Whitinsville since 1978, moving from Pembroke, MA.
Steve had a lifelong love of sports, cheering for his beloved New York Yankees. This love of sports lead to his long time “career” of coaching sports, starting at the age of fifteen with his younger brother’s baseball team. This continued through his life, coaching all three sons in baseball, basketball and his true coaching love, soccer. Even after the boys stopped playing, Steve continued to coach girls’ soccer with the Fuller Hamlets club until the late 2010’s. Steve also coached girls’ soccer at Northbridge High School.
