James Loring Ladd ’54 died on December 31, 2009, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
He was born on February 18, 1933, in Milo, Maine, and graduated from Milo High School. At Bowdoin, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He served as first lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. In 1959, he opened the James L. Ladd Agency in Milo, a real estate and insurance business he operated for many years. He then worked for years as an independent real estate appraiser. He continued to work after retiring, taking a job at a Shell Station in Milo. He was a member of the American Legion, a former member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, and a former Boy Scout leader. He is survived by Shirlene Harris Ladd, his wife of 56 years; two sons, Kyle Ladd and Kent Ladd; two daughters, Lori Cummings and Lana Merchant; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Joanne DeWitt.
