James Standish Carter ’56

James Standish Carter ’56 died on March 18, 2006, in Portland, Maine.

Born in Chester, PA, on June 26, 1934, he became a member of Delta Sigma Fraternity at Bowdoin, which he attended in 1952-53. In 1959, he graduated from Oberlin College and, in 1959, received a master of arts degree from Swarthmore College. He was interested in classical music and history, as well as sports and politics, but suffered a lifelong struggle with mental illness. He returned to Brunswick in his later years and there enjoyed the support of family and friends. Surviving are two brothers, Philip L. Carter of Princeton, MA, and Stephen W. Carter of Woodstock, VT.
