Joel Peskay, 85, of Easton, CT, passed away on October 2nd, 2024. He passed away peacefully at home, in the company of family members and his beloved dog, Rafi. Joel was born on June 2nd, 1939. He was beloved by many, many people. A mensch in every sense of the word, he brought joy to all who knew him.
Joel was a PhD psychologist with multiple doctorates, a competitive swimmer into his 70s, completed multiple marathons and triathlons, and would have preferred to have died suddenly of a heart attack after having just won a major swimming race.
Joel was on the board of Lifetime Learners Institute (LLI), and took many classes (and taught a few as well) and loved LLI a great deal (in fact, the photo above is of Joel teaching a session on artificial intelligence at LLI in late 2023).
Joel is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Vida, his daughter, Elissa, his sons, Joshua and Matthew, his grandchildren Charlie, Lila and Ella, and his daughters-in-law, Jessica and Elizabeth.
Joel will be profoundly missed by all those who knew him and loved him and were loved by him. May he rest in peace.
Vida and family and friends,
I’m so sad to learn this today. Just recently, I noted that Joel was one of my great, benevolent mentors at Bowdoin (in a book I’m writing). We were very close during those years and I cherish the memories of him and you, Vida, and of course your children. He was very intelligent, witty, and a sensitive human being. I loved him like the father I would have preferred. I regret that we were not in touch for long after my graduation. I’m sure Ellen is heartbroken about this loss. I will be thinking of you and light a candle in his honor. With peace and love, Sam
