SHOCKETT, Michael Steven “Mike” Age 62, of Newton Centre passed away on April 27, 2019. Beloved son of Sandra Ruth (Gerstein) Shockett and the late Myer A. Shockett, and brother of Penny E. Shockett. Adored grandson of the late Minnie and Max Gerstein and aunts Helene and Bertha Gerstein, and grandson of the late Jennie and Jacob Shockett. Michael graduated from Newton South High School as a state champion wrestler, Bowdoin College with Honors in Visual Arts, and Harvard University Graduate School of Design with a Master’s of Architecture. As a young person, Michael was an Eagle Scout and lifeguard, ran a landscaping business and had swordfishing adventures on Martha’s Vineyard, then worked in construction and as an architectural draftsman and designer. He was a creative and talented person who was driven to draw through much of life, from childhood contests at the library or synagogue, to many sketchpads filled. His drawings ranged from musings of everyday life, to canine companions, to portraits of people he met, to scenes at bars, to ruins in Greece. Michael was dealt a tough hand in life and those who loved him hope he’s in a better place.
