Peter B. Hathaway ’56
Peter Bowles Hathaway, age 91, of Naples, Maine died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 23, 2025.
He was born in Bangor on September 2, 1934, the son of Harold and Doris (Bowles) Hathaway. Pete grew up in Cape Elizabeth and Naples, graduating from Fryeburg Academy in 1952. He went on to attend Bowdoin College graduating in 1956.
In the summer of 1957, a bout of tonsilitis landed Pete in Mercy hospital, where he met nursing student Maryann McCarthy. They married in 1958 and settled in Topsfield, MA. Pete completed his MBA at Northeastern University in 1966. In 1964, Pete and Maryann adopted son, Steven and daughter Kristin in 1968. Pete was a loving and encouraging husband and father. He instilled a love of the outdoors in his children with skiing in Maine, boating on Cape Ann and hiking in the White Mountains.
Pete worked for Shawmut Bank (now Bank of America) in Boston his entire career. Over time he became a financial analyst and portfolio manager in the institutional investments division. During his tenure he specialized in value-based investing and was recognized by Barron’s Magazine in 2001 for his steadfast strategies. He retired from the Bank of America in 2001 after forty-two years in the banking industry. Pete and Maryann returned to the family farm in Naples to enjoy their retirement.
Pete was passionate about the outdoors and adventuring his entire life. He was an accomplished hiker and was proud of summiting New England’s one hundred highest peaks, as well as distant mountains in Africa, Scotland, Mexico, and the European Alps. He skied well into his late 70s wearing his trademark Scott rear-entry ski boots, wool chinos and L.L. Bean down jacket. Widely traveled, he visited many countries and loved learning about the local history and experiencing the culture.
Following Maryann’s passing in 2010, Pete reconnected with friend Louise Mack, and they subsequently married in 2016. Together they enjoyed traveling, renovating their lakeside residence and spending time with their blended families.
