QUEENSBURY – It is with great sadness that his family shares the passing of Philip C. McIntire. On January 31, 2025, in his sunroom with his dog HoneyBear, and his favorite classical music playing, he went on to meet his love, Rita, who we know greeted him with a gentle kiss and a scotch on the rocks!
Phil was born on March 3, 1943, to Clarence and Helen McIntire, and is survived by his sister, Nancy McIntire of Williamstown, MA. They grew up on Coolidge Avenue, and had lifelong Glens Falls friends. Survivors also include his cousin, Marianne Westbrook of Lubbock, TX; his children, Scott (Stephanie) Matthews, Leigh Anne (Glenn) Dorman, Gregg (Lindsay) Matthews, and Michael (Susan) McIntire. Phil was also known as Pep and Panni to his grandchildren, Annyea and Lily Healy, Reece and Graham Matthews, and Reid and Sorell McIntire. One great-granddaughter, Maya, also loved seeing her Pep on FaceTime.
Philip was the 1961 Glens Falls High School valedictorian, earned his B.A from Bowdoin College in 1965, and his L.L.B from Harvard Law School in 1968. He practiced law for more than fifty years, and was a partner in the Law Firm of Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes. Being part of and contributing to the community was so important to Phil, and he was proud to sit on the CWI board of directors, was a supporter of many local not for profits, and a longtime supporter of The Hyde Collection, being honored as a twenty-one-year trustee. He also had a deep connection to the First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls, serving two terms on the board of trustees, one term as president of the board of trustees, and was a two-time Ruling Elder. In addition, the church was grateful for his decades of service as legal counsel and friend.
He loved conservation, old barns, and old homes, especially the one and only schoolhouse that became “home” to so many family and friends and dogs. Phil and Rita loved Maine, stopping at any and every antique store, and being together with their pups.
Phil’s repeated and final wish for everyone: Be kinder than necessary.
