Richard Dale ’54 died on May 23, 2024, in Fountain Hills, Arizona.

Richard Dale of Fountain Hills, Arizona, died on May 23, 2024, at the age of 91. Dick was born in Columbus, Ohio, on October 22, 1932, to Dr. Edgar and Elizabeth K. Dale. He attended Upper Arlington Elementary and Junior High School in Columbus, Ohio, and high school at the Putney School in Putney, Vermont. Dick received an A.B. degree in political science from Bowdoin College in 1954 and a master’s degree in political science from Ohio State University in 1957. He served in the Third Infantry Division of the U. S. Army and was stationed in Germany from 1957 to 1959. After his military service, he attended Princeton University receiving a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science. Dick taught political science at the University of New Hampshire, and Northern Illinois University. In 1966 he began teaching political science at Southern Illinois University. He married Doris Cruger on August 18, 1967. In 1984, Dick was a visiting professor at the Department of Social Sciences, U. S. Army School of International Studies at Fort Bragg. After retiring, Dick and Doris moved to Fountain Hills. He was active in the Beekeepers book club, the Shakespeare Theatre, and he was an active member of St. Anthony on the Desert Episcopal Church. Dick and Doris loved to travel, and their travels took them on many adventures all over the world. Dick was predeceased by Doris, his loving wife of fifty-six years. Dick is survived by his sister, Dorothy Dale Sherwood, a nephew, William Sherwood (Denise), and a niece, Cynthia Sherwood Kelley (Clint), as well as five great-nephews, William, Christopher, and Matthew Kelley, and Alex and David Sherwood.
