Richard Norman Leavitt G’71

Richard Norman Leavitt, of Exeter, formerly of Intervale, passed away at Langdon Place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 82 years old.

Born in Manchester on May 12,1943, Richard was the son of the late Norman W. and Helen (Burke) Leavitt. Raised and educated in Manchester, Richard attended West High School graduating in 1960. From there he earned his B.S. in mathematics from  Amherst College, and a master’s degree in mathematics from Bowdoin College. He began his teaching career at Governor’s Academy, Byfield, MA. He had a great love for sports, especially baseball; he coached baseball and football. Later serving as the dean of students, his career at Governor’s Academy spanned an incredible fifty years; he was an educator, coach and mentor to many.

Richard is survived by his former spouse, Janet (Murphy) Leavitt, and their children: Jeffery (Karen) and N. Burke, (Elanor); and his fiancée, Jeannette Woodbury, and her sons, Michael (Rosa),and Chirs. He is survived by his brother, Jonathan Leavitt (Fran), In addition to his grandchildren Richard, Catherine, Samantha, Ian, Emily, and Sean, along with his great-grandchildren Damian, Deborah, Owen, Blake, and Parker. Richard also leaves his nieces and nephews: Kathleen (Steve), Maureen (John), Julie (John), and Johnny (Monica).
