Robert Cutler Burr age 88 of Groton, formerly of Wellesley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 12, 2021, surrounded by family. He was the husband of Sadie Elaine (Gammon) Burr of Groton and the late Nancy Whittemore Burr who died in 2002.
Robert Cutler Burr, affectionately known as Bunk, was born in Boston on June 17 (Bunker Hill Day), 1933, the son of Malcolm Wolcott Burr and Dorothy Cutler Burr. Raised in Winchester, he graduated from Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and Bowdoin College in Maine, where he was president of his fraternity. Bunk enlisted in the United States Army Reserves and proudly served his country as an active reservist.
Bunk and Nancy married and soon settled in Wellesley, where together they raised their loving family. Bunk had a successful and rewarding career in Human Resources with The National Shawmut Bank of Boston, retiring as a vice president. Bunk enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, and closely following the New England sports teams, especially the Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. He loved coaching Little League, served as president of the P.T.A. at his children’s school, and he supported many charitable causes.
After Nancy passed, he rekindled his friendship with Sadie. They eventually married and moved to Groton, where they spent many happy years together. They spent their winters in Venice, Florida and greatly enjoyed attending local Little League and high school games. They also loved to go out for the occasional lunch or dinner and attended local theatrical productions.
He is survived by Sadie (called Elli), his children David Burr of Arizona and Susan Konya of Missouri, his brother Sumner Burr of Rockport and Florida, his grandchildren Joseph Clarkin and Jack Clarkin of Missouri, David Elmore of Ithaca, New York, Christopher Elmore of Boston, Tasha Drake of Arizona, his stepson Douglas Kuntz of Maine and his stepdaughter Julie Defino of Connecticut.
