Robert Nevin Smith ’60

Robert Nevin Smith, a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on May 24, 2025. Born on June 3, 1938, to Robert Henry Smith and Velma Kelley Smith, Robert was a man of deep faith, compassion, and commitment to his community. He was the beloved partner of Henley Parker Smith, whom he cherished as the love of his life.

Bob grew up in Winchester, MA, where he graduated from Winchester High School before continuing his education at Bowdoin College, earning his bachelor’s degree. He later earned an MBA from the University of Iowa. His professional life was spent in medical supply sales with American Hospital Supply (now part of Baxter Healthcare), where he made a lasting impact on both his colleagues and clients.

A long-time member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church, Bob was an active and engaged leader. He served faithfully as an Elder, co-chaired the church’s Building Committee, and participated in countless other church initiatives. His contributions to the community extended beyond his church involvement, as he also volunteered with organizations such as Crosslines Toy Store, Boy Scouts, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was also active in the Southern Hills neighborhood improvement projects, NID and CID, working alongside neighbors to enhance their community.

Bob took great pride in his family. He is survived by his son, Michael Nevin Smith, and his wife, Amy, of Austin, TX; his daughter, Kathryn Smith Sloan, of Overland Park, KS; and his two grandsons, Taylor Michael Sloan and Parker David Sloan, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his sister, Valerie Smith of San Diego, CA, and his nephew, Douglas Mantz of Hartford, CT, and niece, Coleby Mantz of York, ME. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Wainwright of Massachusetts.

A man of many interests and passions, Bob cherished time spent with his family and friends. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of fishing, canoeing, tennis, and senior basketball. He was also an avid traveler and a dedicated member of the YMCA, where he stayed active in his later years. His love for videography allowed him to capture and preserve the memories of those he loved, leaving behind a legacy of cherished moments.

Bob’s life was a testament to the importance of family, faith, and service to others. He was a proud father of Mike and Kathryn and was always quick to express how fortunate he was to have such wonderful children. His legacy is one of love, kindness, and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
