Stephen Thiras ’46 died on May 9, 2005, in East Syracuse, New York.
Born on April 5, 1922, in Andover, MA, he prepared for college at Phillips Academy in Andover and became a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity at Bowdoin, which he attended for a year before serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He returned to Bowdoin after the war on the G.I. Bill, and ,following his graduation in September of 1947, he was a sales representative in the book publishing field, representing publishers to bookstores, wholesalers, and libraries in the South and in the New York City area. Later on, he formed an independent sales business, representing a number of smaller publishers. Surviving are his wife, Atha Tehon Thiras, whom he married in 1960; three sisters, Meredith Thiras, Antoinette Thiras, and Lynn T. Sullivan.
