Charles R. Thurston ’54 died August 6, 2014, in Hingham, Mass. He was born on February 6, 1933, in Boston, son of Charles E. Thurston ’29, and graduated from Milton High School. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He entered the Army as a private in 1954 and was assigned to the 724th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Dix, N.J. He attended Northeastern University and Bryant & Stratton Business College after Bowdoin, then went to work at Bailey & Weston, Inc., in Boston, manufacturing window shades and drapery hardware with his father and grandfather. He was named president in 1969, and remained at the company until retiring in 1996. Charles, better known by his middle name, Richard, served as a lector at St. Paul’s Church for 50 years and was athletic director for the Christian Youth Organization. He attended the early bird group of the YMCA to exercise and swim every morning for 30 years. He is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Justine Walden Thurston; sons Charles W., Geoffrey and Dr. Garrett S. Thurston; daughter Justine Stacie Stuart-Tilley; brother John R. Thurston, and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters Joan Donovan and Susan Clancy.
