Albert Roscoe Marshall, age 90, passed away on Friday, January 31st, 2025. Al was born in Thomaston, ME, on January 15 1935, the only child of Kenneth Waterman Marshall and Blanche Almeda Tibbetts.

He was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School, class of 1952, and earned a bachelor of arts degree (cum laude in American History, Phi Beta Kappa) from Bowdoin College in 1956. At Bowdoin, he was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity (president in his senior year) and was a member of the Bowdoin baseball team for four years. He was awarded the James Bowdoin Cup in 1956, provided to that student who has earned a varsity letter and has the highest scholastic average among individuals receiving varsity letters.

Following U.S. Army active duty, he moved to Delaware in 1957 to work for E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company. He retired from DuPont’s Finance function in January 1992 after thirty-four-plus years of service, holding numerous finance management positions. During his career, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Delaware (1967), and the Executive Award in the Graduate School of Credit & Financial Management at Dartmouth College (1977).

Al also continued his career in the U.S. Army, Active and Reserves. He was commissioned a second lieutenant through ROTC at Bowdoin College in 1956, and retired with the rank of colonel after thirty years of service (1986). Significant assignments included deputy commander of the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade in Riverdale, MD, commander of the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade in Norristown, PA and chief of staff, 79th Army Reserve Command, Willow Grove, PA. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal (two) and numerous other awards. He was a life member of the Reserve Officers’ Association, the Civil Affairs Association, the U.S. Army War College Alumni Association, and the Senior Army Reserve Commander’s Association (SARCA).

His military education included Command & General Staff College (honor graduate in 1971), Ft. Leavenworth, KS, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, DC (1973), and the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA (1982).

Al also had a distinguished Masonic career. He became a Master Mason at Seaside Lodge, No.144 in Boothbay Harbor, ME, in 1956 and subsequently became a charter member of Granite-Corinthian Lodge No. 34 in 1968, following his move to Delaware. He retained membership in both lodges. He was a member of the York Rite bodies of Delaware (Chapter, Council and Commandery), was a charter member of Daylight Chapter No. 10, Royal Arch Masons, and served as High Priest and treasurer. He twice served on the staff of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Delaware.

Al was treasurer of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Wilmington (1990 – 2002), and was a charter member of the Valley of Lower Delaware in 2007. He was coroneted a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1997, and crowned an Active Member of the Supreme Council, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in 2002. In 2003, he became Deputy for Delaware and served in that capacity until 2010 when he was elected an Active Emeritus Member of Supreme Council.

His other Masonic affiliations include honorary member of the Supreme Council of Mexico, Delaware Conclave of the Red Cross of Constantine, member of various bodies of the Allied Masonic Degrees, Joshua Association, DeMolay Legion of Honor, Nur Shrine, and the Royal Order of Jesters.

Other activities include Lombardy Hall Foundation (secretary-treasurer for thirty-five years, Life Member Award), DuPont Country Club (1957 – 2008), Delaware Senior Olympics (president and chairman of the Board, 1994 – 2005), Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem (Past Prior; holding rank of Grand Croix and Commander, Order of Merit) and Sons of the American Revolution. Al was a former Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow.

Al was also active in ballroom dance organizations – the DuBarry Assembly (former board member and treasurer) and the New Castle Cotillion (former board member and president). He also served Bowdoin College on the Bowdoin Alumni Schools Interviewing Committee, and volunteered for seventeen years at the LPGA McDonald’s Golf Championship, holding leadership positions in the Gallery Control function.

He was a Board Member and member of the Executive Committee of the National Senior Games Association, Baton Rouge, LA, 2002 – 2008. As a senior athlete, he participated in numerous sports in the annual Delaware games, winning medals in the gold, silver and bronze categories. He also won medals at the National Games level, earning a bronze medal in doubles bowling in 1997 and a silver medal in volleyball in 2007.

Al was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Joan Bauer Marshall. He is survived by his wife, Frances Vaughn Marshall; sons, Craig (Elaine) of Chuluota, FL, and Scott (Crystal) of Roanoke, VA; and granddaughters, Hannah, Nicole, and Taylor.
