Barry M. Mitchell, a resident of Kingston for the last thirty years, died on January 26, 2021, at Golden Hill Nursing Home. He mercifully escaped COVID 19. Barry was a Canadian citizen who was a pioneering mathematician. He graduated from the University of Toronto with both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and obtained his Ph.D. at Brown University. His academic career included teaching at Columbia University, Bowdoin College, and Rutgers University. He wrote two textbooks; “Calculus Without Analytic Geometry” and the pioneering “Theory of Categories.” His wit and graceful style made these difficult subjects easier to understand. Barry was born on June 25, 1933. He loved good company, good wine, French cuisine (he greatly enjoyed Le Canard Enchaine), and the Hudson Valley, as well as living in his historic house, Cloverly. He generously supported causes dear to him. He is survived by distant relatives in Canada and several close friends, including Doreen Peone, Adele Calcavecchio, Jim Fitzmorris and Andrew Tarr.
