Minnetonka, MN – Born May 21, 1928, and died at 96 on April 19, 2025, in Minnetonka, MN. “Most golfers have heard this expression, ‘I’d rather be lucky than good.’ I don’t know how good I’ve been, but I sure have been lucky. Lucky to have been born an American. Lucky to have had good parents, Robert and Agnes Barton, who brought me up with rules and regulations and lots of patience and understanding. Lucky to have grown up in Foxboro, MA, on Sunset Lake with brothers Bob and Bill, and wonderful Stilwell, Bryant, and Thompson cousins. Lucky to have married Doris Brown in 1950, and in our fifty-one years put together a family of four – Kristi, Beth, Doug, and Darcy. (Doris died in 2001, Darcy in 2018.) My luck is still going. I met Elsa Carpenter in 2005 and we are in our nineteenth year together. My sons-in-law Chris Kimsey and Randy Shuman and grandchildren, Joe, Chloe, Ryan, and Caree have added to my joy. I know great-grandchildren Rayden and Ava Rae will exceed my expectations. Finally, I was lucky to go to Bowdoin College ’45-’49, and to work for three wonderful companies—General Mills, Green Giant, and Tombstone Pizza. With all that luck going for me, you would think I would have become a better tennis player. My love to my lovely Elsa and her gracious children Ann Kay (Bill), Matt (Susana), Scott (Louann), Judd (Leslie) and 11 grandchildren. Thanks to the friends I’ve made over the years at school, work, and play.”
