Bernard Hayden Leonard, D.D.S., passed away on July 30, 2017, at home, after a brief illness.

He was born on Nov. 4, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Dr. Bernard Walter and Ruth Horton (Dyer) Leonard. Raised in Washington, D.C., and his childhood summers in Cape Elizabeth, he graduated from St. Albans School in 1954, Bowdoin College in 1958, and University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1963.

He practiced oral surgery and general dentistry in York Harbor for 38 years, after working a year in the Children’s Clinic at the Maine Medical Center.

Ben loved life and embraced something new, weird and wonderful every day…he was a true Renaissance man and enriched the lives of all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. John H. Leonard, in 2016.

Benny is survived by his wife, Helen Diane (Honey) Tolman Leonard; his two daughters, Carol R. Leonard and partner Michael Shirley, of Skowhegan; and Elizabeth (“Lilly”) Leonard Doty and her husband Mark A. Doty, of Madison; two grandsons, Benjamin A. Doty and Jonathan L. Doty; two sisters-in-law, Fay Leonard, of York; and Jean Tolman, of Falmouth; and dearly treasured cousins, nieces and nephews.
