Bruce Wald ’53

Bruce Wald died on February 14, 2021 at the age 86 from heart failure. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Elizabeth, five children, eleven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He began his professional career at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), where he made major contributions to the world’s first reconnaissance satellite and a system for the radiolocation of enemy submarines, founded NRL’s first computer science branch, led its communication sciences division, and retired as executive director of space and communications. Following these thirty-three years at NRL, Dr. Wald embarked on a twenty-seven-year second career consulting to industry, the Department of Defense, and the intelligence community, retiring in 2013 after sixty years of service to national defense.
