David W. Reed ’63 died on February 11, 2016, in Conway, South Carolina.

David W. Reed, son of Robert G. Reed of West Newbury and the late Marion C. Reed, formerly of Wakefield, died last Thursday in a nursing home in Conway, SC, where he had been confined for the last two years with complications of diabetes and paralysis. He resided in Wakefield in his youth and was a graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Class of 1959.
Mr. Reed was a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, from which he earned a commission in the ROTC, and was a veteran of the US Army. During the Cold War years he commanded a tank platoon on the East-West German border facing USSR troops. While in high school, Mr. Reed was a member of the honor society, captain of the basketball team, catcher on the baseball team, and class president his junior year. In his senior year he was awarded The Harvard Book, an honorary presentation by Harvard University to the outstanding student in the class as voted by the administration, faculty, and classmates. He was born in Milford, Conn., in 1941.
Mr. Reed is survived by his father, former managing editor of the Daily Item; niece Susan O’Neill of West Peabody; two daughters and a son; and six grandchildren; all of Columbia, SC.
