Denis (Denny) Monroe passed away on Monday August 24, 2026, at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln, Massachusetts. He was 95. Denis was the son of Arthur and Helen Monroe and grandson of Helen and Walter Stanley Monroe, who was prime minister of Newfoundland from 1924 to 1928.

Denis was born on January 11, 1931. After graduating from Bowdoin College in Maine, he married Mary Ellen (Chirpy) Monroe in 1955. They lived in St. John’s and later in Topsail where they raised three boys. Chirpy also passed away earlier this year at the age of 93.

Denis spent his entire working career in the fish business and was the president of Fishery Products Limited for over twenty years. At its peak, Fishery Products employed five thousand Newfoundlanders until the government takeover of the company in 1984. He was a strong proponent of the two-hundred-mile Canadian fishing zone on the Grand Banks which took effect in 1977 and was chairman of the International Commission for the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries for many years. Denis leaves many old friends and acquaintances in the province and around the world.

Denny had one of the kindest demeanors, was compassionate and fun to be around. He was a great father and an inspiration to all. He enjoyed Wednesday night and Sunday morning hockey at St. Bon’s, trout and salmon fishing, sailing, competitive tennis, berry picking and his vegetable garden in Topsail.

Denis leaves behind three sons (Tim (Suzanne), John (Jennifer), and Daniel), eight grandchildren (Nick, Katie, Sam, Helen, Molly, Lindsey, Dana, and Tate), sixteen great grandchildren (Charlie, Lola, Maggie, Luca, Juliet, Max, Zoey, Hunter, Ellis, Jack, Theo, Madison, Julian, Sydney, Eleanor, and Georgie) spread out in Houston, Toronto, Massachusetts, and Florida.
