Francis C. Hersey III ’46

Francis C. Hersey III ’46 died on March 17, 2017, in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

HERSEY, Dr. Francis Coney III Of North Falmouth, died on March 17, 2017 at the age of 92 in the Cape Cod Community Hospital. Dr. Hersey graduated from Needham High School in 1942 and then attended Bowdoin College, Maine. He was drafted in 1943 by the US Army and sent to the University of West Virginia. He was chosen for the Army medical program and attended University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (pre-med). He attended medical school at the University of Louisville, KY and did his medical internship at Jersey City Medical Center, NJ. He started his medical residency in psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, KS, but was redrafted (Army doctor draft) and sent to Ft. Leonard Wood for two years. After his discharge he completed his psychiatric residency in Rochester, NY. Dr. Hersey and his family moved to his hometown of Needham MA in 1953 where they lived until his retirement to North Falmouth, MA in 1978. While living in Needham he worked at the Brockton VA Hospital, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston and as the director of the Framingham Court Clinic. He also had a private psychiatric practice. While living in North Falmouth, Dr. Hersey worked at the Barnstable Court as a forensic psychiatrist. Dr. Hersey’s interest in art and his skill as a printmaker is appreciated by all who knew him. He was a member of the Falmouth Artist Guild. Fran was also a golfer and long-time member of the Needham and Woods Hole Golf Clubs. Francis leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Shirley Schroy Hersey, RN. He is survived by his children and their spouses: Coral and Mark Horner of Niskayuna NY, Paul Hersey of Bennington VT, Susan and Alfred Garrett of Hilton Head SC and John Hersey and James Rosser of Los Angeles CA. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
