George E. Griggs Jr. ’44 died January 11, 2015, in Katonah, New Hampshire.
He was born in New York City on April 17, 1922. He prepared for college at Pelham Memorial High School in Pelham Manor, NY. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, played tennis, ran track, and was active with the Bugle and Orient. Following graduation, Griggs joined his father in the insurance business, owning and operating George Eastman Griggs Insurance, where he continued to work until his death. His wife of sixty-five years, Vera Johnson Griggs, predeceased him in 2013. He joined the Katonah Fire Department in 1956, and was a member for fifty-nine years, holding numerous positions, including president and as secretary for more than thirty years. Griggs was an active member of the Bowdoin Alumni Association and Alumni Council in addition to being a leader in his community. He is survived by two sons, George E. Griggs III ’71 and Peter J. Griggs ’74; his daughter Christine Griggs Narcisse; and four grandchildren.
