Herbert S. Sawyer ’48

 

Herbert S. Sawyer ’48 died January 2, 2014, in a car accident in Prince Frederick, Md. He was born in Fort Fairfield on August 12, 1927, son of Alfred L. Sawyer, Class of 1904, and he prepared for college at Fort Fairfield (Maine) High School, where he was valedictorian. A member of Sigma Nu fraternity, he graduated in 1951 remaining a member of the class of the 1948. He graduated magna cum laude, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a James Bowdoin Scholar. He earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from MIT in 1951 and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Polytech Institute of Brooklyn in 1965. He served to technician fourth class in the Army at the close of World War II. He worked as an electronics engineer at Wheeler Lab from 1951 to 1954, at Airborne Instruments Lab from 1954 to 1969, and at the Department of Defense in Fort Meade, Md., from 1969 to 1989. He married Eugenia Reider on January 1, 1954. He is survived by brothers Robert B. Sawyer ’54 and Alfred L. Sawyer ’48. He was predeceased by brother Tom M. Sawyer ’46.
