J. Russell Washburne ’50 died February 9, 2012, in Kissimmee, Fla. He was born on October 25, 1929, in Pittsfield, Mass., and prepared for college at the Loomis School and Bloomfield (Conn.) High School. He served to petty officer second class in the Navy from 1948 to 1952, during the Korean War, aboard the USS Des Moines (CA-134). He graduated from Bowdoin in 1954, remaining a member of the class of 1950. He was a member of Kappa Sigma, Masque and Gown, and Bowdoin on the Air (WBOA, now WBOR). He worked for a year as a broadcast engineer at WGAN in Portland right after graduating, then as a technical engineer at IBM. He was named method programmer in 1956, and in 1958 was promoted to staff engineer. He retired after more than twenty-five years, then worked as an independent consultant. He is survived by his son, Richard K. Washburne. He also was the father of Robert, Beverly, and Donna.
