John N. Church ’39 died on June 15, 2014, in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
He was born in Burlington, Vt., on April 27, 1916, and prepared for college at Millbury (Mass.) High School and Worcester Academy. He attended Bowdoin from 1935-1936, a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In World War II, he served in the 20th Air Force in the Pacific. He was working as an agent for the Paul Revere Insurance Company when he retired. He enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing, and served for four years as chapter president of the Green Mountain Club, Worcester Chapter. He also belonged to the Appalachian Mountain Club. He held a commercial pilot’s license. He was a long-standing member of First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury. He is survived by daughter Joanne Ball and three grandchildren. He was predeceased eight years ago by his wife of 55 years, Florence Church, and 13 years ago by son Edward Church. He also was predeceased by brother Dr. Richard Church, and sister Janet Church.
