John W. McCarthy, Jr.  ’64 died on November 20, 2019 in Portland, Maine.

John William McCarthy, Jr, ’64, of Topsham, Maine, passed away Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

John gave sixty years of service to children, families, schools, human services and law enforcement in many roles, from dean of men at Plymouth State College to superintendent of schools and constable in rural New Hampshire.

John graduated from Bowdoin College in 1964 with a degree in psychology and spoke often about his fond memories playing football there. John went on to attend the University of New Hampshire and Boston University for advanced degrees in education.

Friends and family remember his dedication to all aspects of human services, his passion for being in the mountains and downhill skiing and his never ending love for dogs.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Joy, as well as his children, Jifka and Christian; and his sister, Ellen.
