Paul F. Bickford ’42

Paul F. Bickford ’42 died March 13, 2013, in Cape Elizabeth. He was born in Roxbury, Mass., on August 17, 1918, and prepared for college at Great Neck (N.Y.) High School and Stonybrook School, where he played football and won the Long Island wrestling championship in the 185-pound division.

He was a member of Zeta Psi fraternity. He enlisted in the Army infantry during World War II and served to sergeant, then applied his knowledge of German and worked in military government in the Nuremberg Sector of Germany. After the war, he became purchasing agent for the family-founded Hayes-Bickford Lunch Systems Inc., where he worked from 1947 to 1971. He also worked as vice president and treasurer of several other firms. He served on the boards of deacons and trustees at the First Baptist Church of Needham, Mass. A devout fly fisherman, he belonged to the Anglers Club of Wrentham, Mass., and was an ardent amateur photographer. He is survived by daughter Carol E. Bickford and sister Barbara Crimp. He was predeceased in 2000 by his wife of fifty-seven years, Elizabeth Jenkins Bickford.
