Peter C. Morris (Peter C. Liebe)

Peter C. Morris, 75, died on June 11, 2022, at Hawthorne House Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Freeport.

Peter was born in Bridgton on January 31, 1947, delivered by his grandfather, Dr. Irving E. Mabry. He was the eldest son of Charles P. Morris and Ellen T. (Mabry) Morris of Bridgton. He grew up in Bridgton and went to local schools. As a boy, he enjoyed swimming and boating on Highland Lake, baseball, and model rockets. He also developed a lifelong love of reading and literature.

Peter graduated from Bridgton High School, where he was co-captain of the cross-country running team and valedictorian of the class of 1965. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1969, earned an MA in English from the University of Connecticut, and enrolled in the PhD program in English Literature at Brown University.

Peter’s life was tragically and profoundly altered by the onset of mental illness, which first manifested clearly in 1970 while he was enrolled in a master’s degree program at the University of North Carolina. Although he went on to be employed for brief periods as an English teacher and school administrator, as well as self-publishing his own writing and poetry, his illness progressed until he was no longer able to live independently.

Peter changed his last name to Liebe, while receiving ongoing support and care from his parents and other family members, including his aunt, Betty L. (Mabry) Foster and his two uncles, Bill Foster and Burton Mabry of Bridgton. In later years, he was cared for at the Augusta Mental Health Institute and most recently at Hawthorne House in Freeport. Despite his struggle with mental illness, he retained his good heart, sense of humor and love of literature and poetry for the remainder of his days.

Peter was predeceased by both his parents, Charles and Ellen Morris. He is survived by his sister, Jane Morris of Acton, MA, and his brother, John Morris of Bridgton and Shetland, UK.
