Phoebe M. Carey ’11
With profound sadness but endless love, we announce the passing of Phoebe Hopkins Davis McCarthy Carey of Bronxville, NY, who peacefully left this world on December 6, 2025, at the age of 36 after a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by her family and friends, Phoebe showed remarkable strength and grace throughout every step of her journey.
Born on March 29, 1989, in Baltimore, Maryland, Phoebe lived a life defined by compassion, resilience, humor, and an unshakeable spirit. Even in the face of unimaginable challenges, she continued to inspire those around her with hope, optimism, and determination.
Phoebe cherished her family deeply. She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald Collins Carey, Jr., and her adored children, Charlotte Piper and Donald Collins III, who were the light of her life. She is also survived by her mother, Charlotte (Miller) McCarthy, father, Michael J. McCarthy, brothers Billy (Sarah) and Harry (Amanda) McCarthy, her grandmother, Beverly McCarthy, and her eight beloved nieces and nephews — Riley, Ellis, Maggie, Hughie, Annie, Clare, Ella, and Luke — all of whom brought her tremendous joy.
Phoebe is predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Bill McCarthy, and her maternal grandparents, Bill and Anne Miller. She leaves behind many extended family members and countless friends—those she chose as family—who will forever be grateful for the love, laughter, and warmth she shared. Her courage taught us the true meaning of strength and her presence brought us comfort even in the darkest days.
Those who knew Phoebe will remember her gentle heart, fierce bravery, kindness, and generosity. She had an uncanny ability to light up a room and bring people together. Phoebe also had a deep-rooted love of nature and the outdoors. Some of her happiest moments were spent on an Adirondack porch, gazing at the mountains while working on a puzzle, surrounded by family, friends, and her beloved dog, Griffin. Phoebe found great peace and joy in the outdoors—hiking, riding, fishing, skiing, running, and appreciating the quiet beauty of nature. Her time spent at her family’s homes in Glyndon, Maryland, and in the Adirondacks in upstate New York created treasured memories she passed on to her children and all who loved her.
A graduate of The Bryn Mawr School and Bowdoin College, Phoebe was a proud student-athlete and a key member of Bowdoin’s field hockey team, helping the Bears win three national C\championships. Her teammates remember her as spirited, loyal, hardworking, and endlessly supportive. Go Bowdoin Bears!
After college, Phoebe built a successful career in New York, where she was known for her relationship-building and business acumen in positions at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, Korn Ferry, Pitch Book Data, and finally Graph Management.
She faced her cancer journey with extraordinary dignity, bravery, and hope. Even during her most challenging days, she remained a source of strength and inspiration, reminding everyone around her what it means to live with courage and love.
