Richard E. Leeman ’61

Richard E. Leeman ’61 died on December 21, 2015, in Braintree, Massachusetts.

BRAINTREE, Mass. – Richard Eugene “Dick” Leeman, 77, of Braintree, Mass., died on Dec. 21, 2015, at his home, after a long battle with Lewy body dementia. Born in Portland, on July 28, 1938, he was the son of the late Vickery Sumner Leeman and Mabel Susan (Ward) Leeman.

Married on April 24, 1965, he was the beloved husband of more than 50 years to Nancy (Elliott) Leeman.

In addition to his loving wife Nancy, he is survived by daughters, Lauren Leeman of Edinburgh, Scotland, and Bethany Leeman-Weil and her husband Adam of Milton, Mass. He was the grandfather of Evangeline and Reed Leeman-Weil of Milton, Mass.; brother of Louise MacVane and her husband Robert of Gray, brother-in-law of Dick Smith of Mount Pleasant, N.C., and Geraldine Leeman of Saco, brother of the late Harold, Raymond, Henry “Duddy”, and Ronald Leeman, and Ella Leeman-Smith.

Dick graduated South Portland High School in 1957, and Bowdoin College in 1961, where he was captain of Bowdoin College baseball team and a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity.

He served our country with honor in the U.S. Army from 1961-1963, and again in the Army Reserves from 1965-1967.

He worked with Liberty Mutual Insurance Company for 38 years, and was senior vice president and director, National Market Underwriting Operations, before retiring. He was an avid golfer and active member of the Country Club of Halifax. A gentleman and a gentle man, Dick was known for his intelligence, generosity, kindness, and integrity.
