Richard Wright Taylor ’55

Portland, ME- Richard Wright Taylor, MD, died February 23, 2026, after a lengthy time with dementia. He was born in Mt. Kisco, NY, on November 19, 1933, to Norman E. and Isabel (Wright) Taylor. He grew up in the small town of Merrimac, Massachusetts, and graduated from Merrimac High School.

After graduating from Bowdoin College in 1955, Richard worked as a lab assistant during the summer at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, where he met his wife-to-be, Nancy Hodgkins of Portland, Maine, a summer college student at the laboratory. They were married in June of 1957.

Richard graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1959, followed by four years of internship and radiology residency at the Maine Medical Center. He then spent two years as a captain in the US Air Force, as a radiologist at the Elmendorf Air Force Base Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. He loved being in Alaska, and would talk about it to anyone in the last years of his life.

When it was time to settle down, he and his growing family moved to Lewiston, Maine, where he practiced general radiology and nuclear medicine at St. Mary’s General Hospital until he retired. He was a member of the Maine Radiological Society, the Maine Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.

With the children off in their own lives, Richard and Nancy began their next chapter in Yarmouth and Cumberland, Maine, enjoying building a new house and settling into a quiet retirement.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Linda. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Portland, ME, and his children, Doug (Debra Young), of Longmeadow, MA, Cindy (Dan Evans), of Portland, ME, Mike (Jacquie Gouveia) of Belchertown, MA, and Alison (Steve Giannoni) of Knutsford, England. He enjoyed grandchildren Max Taylor (Jackie Paris), Zach Taylor (Jennah Hiari), Samantha and Sydney Taylor, Cameron and Gavin Stewart, and Lukas Giannoni, along with great-grandchildren Lily, Harrison, Rita, and Ruby.
