Robert B. Sawyer ’54 died on October 7, 2017, in Bloomington, Indiana.

Robert Bruce Sawyer, 85, passed away peacefully, Saturday, October 7, surrounded by family at the Stonecroft Health Campus in Bloomington, Indiana.

He was born on September 18, 1932, to Alfred Loomis Sawyer and Eva Mills Sawyer in Fort Fairfield, Maine. Growing up in Maine, Bob graduated from Fort Fairfield High School, and then completed his education with a bachelor of arts degree from the prestigious Bowdoin College, where he studied physics and mathematics.

Bob’s work included being a technician in the US Army Signal Corps all across Germany, manager of manufacturing at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Bloomington, Indiana, and then eventually retiring in Bloomington as a senior industrial engineer at Westinghouse Corp.

Bob enjoyed his winter home in Florida, traveling (especially to Maine), golfing with wife and friends and supporting his stepchildren and grandchildren in their academic and athletic endeavors.

Bob leaves behind his wife of forty-two years, Connie Hulls Sawyer, nieces, Dr. Diane Sawyer Lipkin (David) and Cindy Sawyer Love, nephew, Tom Sawyer, his stepson and wife, JC Hulls (Joni), his grandchildren, Jay Hulls (Lauren), Kati Hulls, Jordan Hulls (Aubrey) and Kaila Hulls and three great-grandchildren, Claire Hulls, JJ Hulls, and Jackson Hulls.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, older brothers, Tom Sawyer, Loomis Sawyer and Herbert Sawyer, his stepson, Andrew Thomas Hulls, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
