Roger W. Kirwood ’60 died on May 22, 2026, in Orange, Connecticut.

Roger W. Kirwood ’60

Roger W. Kirwood, of Orange, affectionately known as “Captain Funn,” passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at Orange Health Care Center, with the love of his family surrounding him. He was the devoted and beloved husband of Lucia Bartiromo Kirwood. Born in the Bronx, New York, on January 24, 1939, he was the son of the late John C. Kirwood and Helen Wegman Kirwood. Roger served his country with pride and honor in the United States military from 1962 to 1966, attaining the rank of first lieutenant before receiving an honorable discharge.

Roger was best known as the owner of Fitzwilly’s and Peeper’s Café, where his warmth, humor, and generous spirit made everyone feel welcome. He truly loved people and was the consummate host, always ready with a smile, a story, or a laugh. A modern-day Renaissance man, Roger embraced life with energy, curiosity, and a wonderful sense of adventure. He found joy in cooking, skiing, and flying his privately-owned plane, and he was never happier than when he was surrounded by family, friends, and the lively company he so naturally drew to himself. After retiring from the restaurant business, he continued to connect with others through various sales positions, including his work as a real estate agent with the former Wichert Real Estate Co.

In addition to his wife, Lucia, Roger leaves behind his loving children, Zachary, Bowen, and Josh Kirwood; his brother, Ronald Kirwood; five cherished grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Lisa Landon, and his brother, Robert Kirwood, both of whom he held close to his heart.
