Sanford A. “Sandy” Kowal ’56 died on March 5, 2013, in Newton, Massachusetts.
He was born in Newark, N.J., on August 27, 1934, and prepared for college at Newton (Mass.) High School. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and went on to graduate from Boston University Law School in 1961. He served to first lieutenant in the Army in Korea and Japan and as special counsel to the Legislative Committee on Electronic Eavesdropping, and he authored Wiretapping and Eavesdropping (1967). Active in the Democratic party in Massachusetts, he served on the Democratic State Committee from 1968 to 1976. He is survived by sons Robert D. and David Kowal; brothers Harold F. and Dr. Ira J. Kowal; companion Ann L. Griffith; and three grandchildren.
