Steven R. Sortevik ’72 died on May 15, 2024, in Gainesville, Florida. As a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, Steve was known for his wry sense of humor and the fake British accent he assumed on certain social occasions. After graduation Steve pursued a career in education, interrupted by a decade as a lawyer. He last taught social studies on Nantucket, where he also served on the school committee.
Steve made several trips to Scandinavia over the years, no doubt in search of his Viking roots. Not just a tourist, Steve settled in Norway for several years, where he taught at an American School. His travels also included Denmark, where he enjoyed spending time with his former Bowdoin roommate, a Copenhagen native.
After retiring from teaching, Steve moved from Nantucket to South Hampton, New Hampshire. A few heavy snows impelled him to see a bit more of the U.S. He bought a 7-ton travel trailer and a pickup truck powerful enough to tow it, and he set off for New Mexico, where he had once taught at a Navajo community school. From there, he headed east into Texas. Steve’s last trek took him from Dallas to Gainesville, in January 2024, to visit a cousin and his niece and grandnephews. Family was always important to him.
