Wayne M. Gardiner, a devoted educator, coach, and lifelong lover of learning and sports, passed away peacefully in Lancaster, New York, on July 8, 2026, at the age of 74. He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on November 16, 1951, and was a native of Kittery, Maine.
Wayne was the son of the late Clifford and Pearl Gardiner. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Bowdoin College and later received a master of arts degree in mathematics education from Rutgers University.
For forty-two years, Wayne dedicated his professional life to teaching mathematics at Delbarton School in Morristown, New Jersey. During his long and distinguished career, he made a lasting impact on generations of students through his knowledge, patience, and commitment to education.
In addition to teaching, Wayne was deeply involved in athletics at Delbarton. He coached cross country, indoor winter track and field, and outdoor track and field. His passion for sports and his dedication to his athletes were important parts of his life and his contribution to the school community.
Wayne had a deep appreciation for travel, adventure, and the beauty of the outdoors. Some of his most memorable experiences came through trips with close friends to the national parks of the American Southwest and across Canada. He enjoyed exploring these remarkable landscapes on foot, hiking through rugged terrain and taking in the scenery, as well as kayaking on the lakes and waterways he encountered along the way. These adventures were about more than the destinations themselves—they were opportunities to share laughter, friendship, and unforgettable experiences with people he cared about.
Wayne also had a keen interest in sports and a genuine love of trivia and learning. Among his favorite activities was organizing an annual golf “tournament” with friends, combining his love of the game with his enthusiasm for travel and good company. These outings took the group to several of the more popular and scenic golf courses along the eastern seaboard. Each trip provided an opportunity to explore new courses, enjoy time with friends, and create lasting memories both on and off the golf course. He was also an enthusiastic fan of the television game show “Jeopardy!,” reflecting the curiosity and breadth of knowledge that characterized him throughout his life.
Wayne is survived by his brother, David (Deborah) Gardiner, as well as a niece Hillary (Jon) Croce, and two nephews, Michael and Eric (fiancé MacKenzie Crable) Gardiner.
Wayne will be remembered for his dedication to teaching, his love of mathematics and knowledge, his commitment to athletics, and the many lives he touched during his forty-two years at Delbarton School. His memory will live on in the family, students, athletes, colleagues, and friends who were fortunate to know him.
