William U. Small ’48

William U. Small ’48 died August 18, 2013, in Topsham. He was born on February 14, 1927, in Caribou and graduated from Caribou High School. He studied for one semester at the University of Maine–Orono and one semester at Bowdoin, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He left to join the Army after World War II and served to private first class. He graduated from Bowdoin in 1949, remaining a member of the class of 1948. He went on to earn a master’s in business administration at Columbia University in 1951. He held managerial positions at Western Auto Supply Co. and Haines Manufacturing before joining the University of Maine system, first as center director of the Presque Isle campus, then associate director of Portland-Gorham. He was a communicant at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Cape Elizabeth and a member of the Portland Rotary Club and the University of Southern Maine Retirees Association. He is survived by daughter Deborah S. Russell, son William H. Small, and four grandchildren. He was predeceased in 2007 by his wife of fifty-six years, Marion Haines Small; and in 2005 by his brother Ogden E. Small ’53.
