Albert (Bert) W. Lowe, of Acton, MA passed away peacefully on May 1, 2020 under the wonderful care of the staff at Emerson Hospital Concord, MA. He is survived by his wife of almost fifty years, Gunvor (Berggren) Lowe of Acton, and his son, Philip Lowe of Lakewood, CO.
Bert was born January 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, OH, to Gladys M. and Philip R. Lowe. He spent his early years in Charlotte, NC, and then moved with his family to Reading, MA, where he attended and graduated high school. As a young man was active in Boy Scouts, was an amateur rock hound, enjoyed cars, and was a voracious reader of science fiction.
Bert received his bachelors in physics from Bowdoin College, and later a M.S. in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. He had a diverse career as an engineer working on many different projects and in different fields, but Bert’s professional and private passion was neural networks, as an early proponent of this method of machine learning; he was delighted in his later years to see its advancement, especially in the area of deep learning.
Bert was lucky in life as he found the love of his life in a young Swedish nurse named Gunvor Berggren who had emigrated to the U.S. from Finland. Together they had a son to whom he took great pride in passing down his knowledge, and sharing his love of scouting, the outdoors, skiing and reading. He enjoyed volunteering his time to the Acton Boxborough Friends of Music and Acton Troop 11 while his son was in growing up. Later he joined his wife, Gunvor, in supporting SWEA Boston and the Scandinavian Cultural Center. He will be missed by those that knew him.
