Arthur W. Gardner ’51  died on April 1, 2010, in Newport, Maine.

Arthur W. Gardner ’51

Arthur W. Gardner 82, who did development work at the Smithsonian Institution from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s and was in charge of special events for its board of trustees, died April 1 at his home in the District. He had congestive heart failure. Mr. Gardner spent his early career at the brokerage firm of Auchincloss, Parker and Redpath in the District and at the Treasury Department. Arthur Wendell Gardner was born in Detroit and grew up partly in the District. His father, also named Arthur, was an industrialist and banker who became President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s ambassador to Cuba. The younger Mr. Gardner graduated in 1946 from the private Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., and then attended Bowdoin College in Maine. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. His memberships included the Metropolitan Club and the Chevy Chase Club. He was a past president of the Waltz Group of Washington, a dance group, and was on its board at the time of his death. His wife, Joan Landor Gardner, whom he married in 1952, died in 2001. A daughter, Wendy, died in childhood from meningitis. Survivors include two daughters, Hilary Peterson of the District and Blake Cook of New Vernon, N.J.; a sister; and five grandchildren.
