Fred M. Fernald Sr. ’40

Fred M. Fernald Sr. ’40 died on November 2, 2012, in Winchester, Virginia.

He was born on March 20, 1917, in Lewiston, the son of Clarence J. Fernald, Class of 1907, and prepared for college at Roosevelt High School and Devitt Preparatory School. He attended Bowdoin from 1936 to 1937, a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the Army during World War II and worked as a program analyst and training administrative officer for the Army in Saigon during the Vietnam War. He retired as a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker in Alexandria, Va. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He is survived by son Fred M. Fernald Jr., daughter Margarete E. Bukowski, brother Louis Fernald, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives, Margarete Cockerille Fernald, Gertrude “Ellen” Payne Fernald, and Hallie Williams Fernald.
