George A. Murray ’51 died on December 18, 2010, in La Jolla, California.

George A. Murray ’51

George A. Murray was born October 21, 1930, to Dr. and Mrs. George A. Murray of Boston, MA. He died of complications after surgery in La Jolla, CA on December 18, 2010, with many family members at his bedside. George graduated from Boston College High School and Bowdoin College, where he was selected for an All-American football team his senior year. Upon graduation, he entered the Marine Corps and served as a forward air controller in the Korean War. George’s business career spanned the better  part of five decades. He found his calling and a career while working as a registered representative for Merrill Lynch in La Jolla, CA. He then joined Hayden Stone & Co. to open their La Jolla brokerage office and subsequently head up their west coast region. By the mid 1960s he had moved to New York to lead the firm’s nationwide retail business and was made president of the firm in 1968. Hayden Stone & Co. was acquired by Cogan, Berlin, Weill and Levitt in 1970. George stayed on to ensure a smooth transition and then left to join, successively, Dillon Read and Dominick & Dominick in a variety of senior roles. George rejoined Shearson Loeb Rhodes (the very same CBWL-Hayden Stone after additional acquisitions and a name change) in the late 1970s as their eastern divisional leader and remained until he moved to head the private client business of Prudential Securities in 1992. He retired six years later at 68 and devoted his time to board work for various public and private entities, including a long-time trusteeship at Avon Old Farms School in CT. and an appointment as a member of the Board of Administration of the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System. Throughout his business career, George proved an inspirational leader for those fortunate enough to work for and with him. Highly principled, inclusive, and loyal, he enjoyed a fierce loyalty in return. He could and would defuse most any crisis with humor, a humor never directed at individuals. An extraordinary mentor, he leaves a legion of associates and family whose personal lives and careers benefited mightily from his influence. George enjoyed traveling all over the country to see his children and grandchildren, and never without his camera. He took great pleasure in his photography and in giving away his photographs to family and friends. He also loved to spend time in Honolulu, Hawaii, whenever possible. Mr. Murray leaves behind a loving wife of fifty-eight years, the former Trudy Rollins. They have seven children: Barbara Christine of La Jolla, Mary Scott (Mrs. Dennis Grimaldi of Westport, CT), Louise (Mrs. John C. Marshall of La Jolla), Gigi (Mrs. James Longstreth of Carmel, IN), Hollis Clare (Mrs. Henri LeMeur of Warren, PA), George A. III and Rachel (both of La Jolla), as well as sixteen wonderful grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Murray also leaves behind a sister, Clare M. Murray of  Boston, MA.
