John Kennedy Wyman was born on January 11, 1941, and died peacefully on the morning of October 8, 2026. He grew up in Weston, MA. His father, a prominent horticulturist, was a professor at Harvard University, and John was raised on an experimental farm. He was one of four children, all of whom loved gardening and creating beautiful spaces.
John graduated with a degree in economics from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, in 1962. He was a very successful athlete; and for two years was the captain of the tennis team and the Maine Intercollegiate Tennis Champion.
Upon his graduation, he spent two years in U.S. Army, stationed in Honolulu, HI. He spent much of that time in the far east with a tank battalion, but in addition, played tennis for the Army.
Upon his military discharge, he returned to Boston and worked for the New England Telephone Company, which later became part of AT&T. He met Nancy Townsend of Buffalo, NY, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, and they were married in 1970. John and Nancy have two children, Heather LoVecchio and Erica Blystone, and five grandchildren.
John remained with AT&T until his retirement, and in 1989, created a business consulting operation, working exclusively for Englehard Corporation, a precious-metals company with world-wide operations.
Upon his retirement, John and Nancy built a home in Durham, NC, where John could focus on his agricultural pursuits. After nineteen years, they moved to Croasdaile Village, in Durham. They have been active members of the Episcopal church for fifty-seven years.
John was proud of a number of things, none more than the respect of his family; he was recognized as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather by all! Additionally, he was extremely pleased by his parents and siblings; becoming an Eagle Scout; his four years at Bowdoin College, his performance on the tennis court, as well as his commitment to Bowdoin; and his major contribution to Duke Garden’s Water Lily Program.
