Judson R. Merrill ’46 died February 1, 2014, in Cape Coral, Fla. He was born in Gardner, Mass., on July 4, 1925, and prepared for college at Deering High School in Portland. A member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he attended Bowdoin from 1943 to 1944, then joined the Navy. He served to lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserves, retiring in 1968 after twenty-two years. He attended the Maine Maritime Academy for one year, returned to Bowdoin in 1947, and graduated in 1948, remaining a member of the class of 1946. After two years at Cashier Union Mutual Life Insurance Company, he enrolled at Suffolk University and earned a master’s of education degree in 1959. He then worked for ten years in the Scituate (Mass.) school system, starting as an office manager and working his way to assistant superintendent. He left Scituate in 1962 to serve as the superintendent of schools in Amesbury, Mass.; assistant superintendent in West Newburg, Mass.; and elementary school principal in Merrimac, Mass. He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Wayne Moulton Merrill; five children; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
