Westport, Connecticut – Robert Hugh Allen (Bob) was born on January 13, 1924, in Breckenridge, Texas. Five year later his family moved to Augusta, Maine, where Bob excelled in football, hockey, and debate in high school. He began his higher education at Bowdoin College but left for military service in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific. After the war ended, Bob returned to Bowdoin College and graduated with a degree in economics. Degree in hand, he entered the world of business outside of Maine, beginning with a career in sales that eventually expanded into international marketing. Before retiring in 1986 from his role as vice president for ITT, Bob traveled extensively throughout the world in a business career that spanned nearly forty years. An active retirement followed in Westport, CT, the town where he lived over sixty years, built a home, and raised a family. Notable during these years was Bob’s membership in the Westport Y’s Men Club, including a term as president. During a difficult site location in the Westport YMCA’s history, he was a steady influence on the board of trustees. Bob Allen is survived by his wife, Thelma, as well as by three children, Christopher Allen (Lissa), Patricia Hyde, and Colin Allen (Deena), two stepchildren, Amy Schwartz and Andrew Schwartz, eight grandchildren, Jessica, Kirsten, Kimberly, Kaitlin, Jocelyn, Kyle, Matthew and Christian, and five great grandchildren.
